The painting shows an unusually elaborate form of pointillist painting technique short strokes, as well as with the palette knife  excessively overlapping areas of color. From this remarkable technique benefits in particular the representation of heaven and reflections in the river.

The St. Martial bridge over the River Vienne ( a tributary of the Loire) is of Roman origin and the access to the old town of Limoges.

The painter Gaston Charles René Cantin was a professor at the École des Beaux-Arts de Poitiers.

He was also an art teacher in Limoges and finally in Antibes, before he settled after retirement in Bignoux. There he had become by inheritance of his wife's grandfather the castle lord of Château- Fromage. Here he continued to contribute as a landscape and still life painter .

His most important creative period were the 20s and 30s in Limoges and Antibes. During this time he repeatedly exhibited in the Art Salon of Nice.
